The images date back to the 1st May of 2005 and show ORIANA at anchor in Funchal, Madeira. The lack of space in the harbour, with 4 other cruise ships in port that day, was the main reason for her anchorage and so being one of the first to arrive she made her way to the east quarter of the bay then to begin disembarking. At the time she was traveling from Bridgetown after a Caribbean cruise and departed at early afternoon homebound.
This was actually the only time she ever anchored in Funchal, more recently in December 2009 and in a similar voyage( from Bridgetown to Southampton), ORIANA was scheduled to but the rough sea conditions presented itself a great risk for the tender disembarkation and the captain, at the time Paul Brown, decided to cancel the call and proceed to Southampton.
Photos kindly sent by Nuno Jesus.
"As with her cherished namesake and her sister the sacred CANBERRA, old acquaintance will be more than enough to ensure that whenever the great ships of Britain are brought to mind, another ORIANA shall now never be forgot."
